2022 marks 10 years of working to regenerate this patch of ground we call Yarnauwi. There’s been some triumphs, and plenty of failure. Throughout it all, we’ve been inspired and encouraged by an amazing community of family, friends and neighbours, as well as the broader community of people working to restore landscapes and cultivate regenerative farms around the world. To celebrate, Joel’s been working on this little comic describing how the landscape has changed over this time. It’s an attempt to pay tribute to all those that have carried us, and this project, over the last decade. Thank you for your support.

Well done to you guys and all involved.
Love seeing your patch evolve and develop.
Cheers
Thanks so much, and thank you for all your support over the years. We’ve been greatly inspired by all you’ve done on your place as well!

Wow that is a decade well spent! A sublime undertaking, congratulations. What I would like to know, coming from a place where eucalypti are robust invasive species – do you contend with invaders?
Hi Carolize, thanks for your kind words! It’s certainly very satisfying seeing a landscape slowly transform, as I’m sure you know as a fellow gardener! Yes, weeds are certainly a challenge across Australia, and in our region, plants that are well adapted to a climate of hot, dry summers and cool wet winters such as those from the Mediterranean, South Africa or California can be particularly resilient. In some circumstances the plants are both problematic and productive – such as olives which are a significant industry throughout South Australia while escapees colonise bushland. Likewise, species from other parts of Australia that don’t naturally occur in a particular region have also gained footholds in some areas, to the exclusion of locally indigenous species. On or around our own property, we have a number of “declared weeds” that we are working to manage to limit their spread and their impact on local biodiversity. In our pastures we have a few weeds that are a result of poor management (both our own and historical) that we are also looking to manage – we’re having some impact with mowing at critical times to promote desirable species and in the future would like to also use animals to manage these. Our comic on weeds (https://yarnauwi.com/2022/03/26/farm-comic-on-weeds/) details some of the ideas we’ve been grappling with in thinking about weed management in a permaculture context.
